Computing & Online Safety

A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use creativity to understand and change the world.

At Occold Primary School pupils are introduced to a wide range of technology, including laptops, iPads, Chromebooks, Crumble Kits, Micro:bits and interactive whiteboards, allowing them to continually practice and improve the skills they learn. This ensures they become digitally literate so that they are able to express themselves and develop their ideas through information and computer technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

We also use learning platforms including Purple Mash and Microsoft to add an extra dimension to our computing and strengthen links between home and school.

Occold Primary School takes online safety extremely seriously. Each half term, children participate in an E-Safety lesson, but Computing is not the only lesson internet safety is discussed in. Children learn more about this topic within PSHE lessons, assemblies and during enrichment opportunities such as our 3 Days of STEM. Each year, we also participate in Safer Internet Day.

3 Days of STEM

During our 3 Days of STEM children enjoyed using our new Crumble Kits. These are beginner-friendly electronics and coding systems that let children build and program interactive projects such as robots, lights and sensors using a simple programmable controller.

The children also enjoyed using our Micro:bits. These are small programmable computers that include built-in sensors, buttons, LEDs and wireless features for coding and creating all sorts of digital inventions!

Visitors in school

We are fortunate to have had several visitors join us in school recently to talk to the children about how technology is used in their jobs.

Thus not only the mental and the material but the theoretical and the practical in the mathematical world, are brought into more intimate and effective connection with each other.
