PE and Sports Competitions

At Occold Primary School we are keen for all our children to develop healthy, active lifestyles. We follow the scheme of work Get Set 4 PE which gives our children the opportunity to develop a wide variety of knowledge and skills in PE.

Each year, all children in our school go swimming. Swimming lessons take place in the Spring and Summer term at Stradbroke Primary School.

In addition to our weekly PE lessons, swimming, Forest School and break/lunch times outside, we also provide children with a variety of opportunities to participate in sports and outdoor and adventurous activities outside school.

Here are just a few of the opportunities we provide for our children:

  • Each year, we take the whole school to Whitlingham Adventure in Norwich, but this year we went to Hautbois Activity Centre instead. Here the whole school enjoyed spending time out on the lake in either a sailing boat, katakana, canoe, kayak or stand-up paddleboard. The children developed team work skills by building rafts and bridges.

  • Once every two years we visit Piper’s Vale Gymnastics Centre in Ipswich, where the children are able to use a wide range of apparatus including Asymmetric Bars, High Bars, Parallel Bars, High and Low Beams, Rings, Vaults, Pommels, as well as the Sprung Floor Area (competition standard), a Tumble Track, Fast Track, Foam Pits, Trampettes and floor level Trampolines.

  • We are committed to both maximising participation and competition in sport. We take part in a wide range of sporting tournaments organised by the High Suffolk School Sport Partnership including Cross Country, Athletics and Hockey Tournaments.

  • Each year, Year 6 visit Hilltop Activity Centre for their residential, where they participate in a variety of outdoor and adventurous activities, including climbing, caving, assault & agility courses, archery, tree climbing, orienteering and treetop trail.

  • Twice a year, we are joined by coaches from Premier Sport to provide enrichment afternoons. Recently the children enjoyed learning how to play Handball, Lacrosse and Golf.

  • As we don't have a school hall, we hire Occold's village hall all year round, which provides a large space for indoor activities and as a back-up when we experience poor weather. We often use this space to welcome visitors. Recently we enjoyed circus skills, football skills and boogie bounce workshops.

  • We enjoy hosting annual sports events which involve the whole family, such as our annual Sports Day, as well as fundraising activities such as our Colour Run and sponsored Easter Bunny Hop!

  • We have even had visits from Paralympians to inspire the children!
