Forest School
What is Forest School and why is it so important?
Forest School has been developed from the Scandinavian education system and is all about children and young people building self-esteem and independence through exploring and experiencing the natural world. Forest School is a long-term programme delivered by trained practitioners within a natural environment - not necessarily a forest! We are lucky to have lots of outdoor space at our school.
The ethos of Forest Schools allows learners the time and space to develop skills, interests and understanding through practical, hands-on experiences. Activities are child-initiated and led. Children are encouraged to make their own choices and to take risks.
An increasing body of research evidence shows that Forest Schools has a measurable positive impact on children's social, emotional and physical development. We also notice it positively impacting children's behaviour and mental health. Most importantly, the children always have great fun and lots of core memories are made during these sessions.
When will my child do Forest School?
Children in our school will often spend one afternoon each week over the course of a term enjoying Forest School sessions. All our children from Reception to Year 6 get to experience forest school sessions each year they are with us. We try to vary the time of year the children do Forest School so they can explore the outdoors throughout the seasons.
